Homeopathy and the NHS: What Is Available in the UK

Homeopathy is not routinely prescribed or commissioned by the NHS in England. Homeopathy World is a private complementary-care service and is not an NHS clinic.

The evidence position is clear. NHS guidance states that there is no good-quality evidence that homeopathy treats any health condition. NICE does not recommend it for treating any health condition.

Why NHS prescribing changed

NHS England’s policy guidance lists homeopathy among items that should not routinely be prescribed in primary care. The evidence review used for that policy found no clear or robust evidence to support its use on the NHS.

Can a GP refer me?

Local services and commissioning decisions can change, but routine NHS homeopathy should not be expected. A private complementary consultation does not replace your NHS care. Ask the private clinic about its fees and terms before booking.

Should I tell my GP?

Yes. Tell your GP, pharmacist or relevant specialist about any complementary product you use, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, arranging care for a child, taking several medicines or waiting for investigation of a symptom.

Can I stop prescribed medicine?

No. Do not stop, reduce or change prescribed medicine because of a homeopathy consultation. Discuss changes with the clinician who prescribed it or another appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Does an MHRA product number mean the NHS recommends it?

No. An HR or NR number concerns the product’s regulatory route, quality, safety information and permitted presentation. It is not NHS endorsement and is not general proof of clinical effectiveness.

Where private homeopathy fits

Some people choose a private consultation for a longer conversation or personal exploration of complementary care. The service should state its evidence limits, avoid claims to treat a condition and recognise when medical assessment is needed.
