Harley Street is a street in Marylebone whose name became shorthand for a wider private medical district. The concentration of medical practitioners developed during the nineteenth century and extended into neighbouring streets.
From residential estate to professional district
Harley Street forms part of the Georgian and later development of Marylebone. Doctors and other professionals increasingly occupied houses in and around the street during the nineteenth century. The building type suited consulting rooms combined with private accommodation.
Growth of the medical association
The district’s medical identity strengthened as private consulting rooms, hospitals and professional organisations clustered around Harley Street, Wimpole Street, Devonshire Street and Weymouth Street. By the twentieth century, “Harley Street” had become a geographic and reputational label broader than one street.
The area today
The Harley Street Health District includes independent hospitals, clinics, diagnostic services, consultants and health-related businesses. The district still sits within Marylebone and includes protected historic townscape as well as modern clinical facilities.
