Constitutional homeopathy is a traditional homeopathic approach in which a practitioner considers a broad pattern of information about a person, not only one current symptom. The aim within that tradition is to select an individualised remedy.
What “constitutional” means in homeopathy
The term usually refers to a whole-person case picture. A homeopath may ask about the current concern, previous health history, sleep, appetite, temperature preferences, routines, emotional responses and other personal features. Different practitioners may use the term differently, so ask what it means in the service you are considering.
What is a constitutional remedy?
In homeopathic tradition, a constitutional remedy is the product selected as the closest match to the overall case picture. It is not a medical diagnosis, a genetic type or a scientifically validated personality category. A single person should not be assumed to need the same remedy throughout life.
How this differs from problem-focused homeopathy
| Constitutional approach | Problem-focused approach |
|---|---|
| Uses a broad personal history and pattern. | Concentrates on a narrower current concern. |
| Usually involves longer case-taking. | May use a shorter or more structured consultation. |
| Aims for an individualised match within homeopathic theory. | May rely more on common remedy pictures or protocols. |
These are practice descriptions. Neither label establishes that the approach is effective.
Questions to ask a homeopath
- How do you describe your method?
- How long is the first consultation?
- How do you record consent, medicines and medical history?
- When would you refer me to my GP, pharmacist or urgent care?
- Will you ever advise me to stop prescribed treatment? A responsible answer should be no.
- What does the fee include, and what happens between appointments?
